I don't really distinguish between sympathy and honesty when I'm writing. The two go together - I'm interested in inhabiting my characters seeing the world through their eyes.

Badges mean nothing in themselves but they mark a certain achievement and they are a link between the rich and the poor. For when one girl sees a badge on a sister Scout's arm if that girl has won the same badge it at once awakens an interest and sympathy between them.

It is by a wise economy of nature that those who suffer without change and whom no one can help become uninteresting. Yet so it may happen that those who need sympathy the most often attract it the least.

Interest does not tie nations together it sometimes separates them. But sympathy and understanding does unite them.

It's so interesting how success hits people and how they react to it.

The very first step towards success in any occupation is to become interested in it.

For unflagging interest and enjoyment a household of children if things go reasonably well certainly all other forms of success and achievement lose their importance by comparison.

The superior man makes the difficulty to be overcome his first interest success only comes later.

So Europe needs to be competitive and we also need to be competitive if we wish to remain an interesting economic partner for the United States. This has to be done on the basis of strength of competitiveness.

It's too bad that one has to conceive of sports as being the only arena where risks are for all of life is risk exercise. That's the only way to live more freely and more interestingly.
