Funny is not a color. Being black is only good from the time you get from the curtain to the microphone.

My parents are very funny when they have to deal with anything racy or off-color. They usually pretend they don't speak English.

Freedom is an indivisible word. If we want to enjoy it and fight for it we must be prepared to extend it to everyone whether they are rich or poor whether they agree with us or not no matter what their race or the color of their skin.

This June I'll travel once again to the Food and Wine Magazine Classic in Aspen Colorado. For many years my dear friend Julia Child and I have teamed up to teach classes together at the event for the past seven years my daughter Claudine has been my cooking partner on stage.

I'm into very colorful food. Obviously lots of flavor but I think we eat with our eyes first so it has to look great. The presentation has to be great.

I tell my students it's not difficult to identify with somebody like yourself somebody next door who looks like you. What's more difficult is to identify with someone you don't see who's very far away who's a different color who eats a different kind of food. When you begin to do that then literature is really performing its wonders.

So here we are today with a new conversation. When University of Georgia plays Georgia Tech it's uniform color versus skin color. We have - we've overcome that level of racial fear.

My family moved a lot as a kid. We started in Colorado where I lived for five years. We moved to Chicago for two years to San Francisco for one year Connecticut for seven Oregon for a couple years and then I went to school.
