We are rather in the position that used to exist at the BBC where you feel that you can pick up the phone to people who are experts in their field and they will be very favourably disposed to you and share their knowledge.

The Clinton White House today said they would start to give national security and intelligence briefings to George Bush. I don't know how well this is working out. Today after the first one Bush said 'I've got one question: What color is the red phone?'

I was brought up in a very open rural countryside in the middle of nowhere. There were no cell phones. If your lights went out you were lit by candlelight for a good four days before they can get to you. And so my imagination was crazy.
