Over the next two years UNICEF will focus on improving access to and the quality of education to provide children who have dropped out of school or who work during school hours the opportunity to gain a formal education!

To compete in a global economy our students must continue their education beyond high school. To make this expectation a reality we must give students the tools they need to succeed including the opportunity to take a college entrance exam.

With Michigan's economic future on the line we can't afford to have our 500 local school districts marching in different directions. Instead we need a high standards mandatory curriculum to get all our students on the road to higher education and a good paying job.

An education program is by definition a societal program. Work should be done at school rather than at home.

Our youth deserve the opportunity to complete their high school and college education free of early parenthood. Their future children deserve the opportunity to grow up in financially and emotionally stable homes. Our communities benefit from healthy productive well-prepared young people.

I was a total education geek. I loved school. I loved learning. I loved doing homework. All of my books and notebooks from high school are underlined and highlighted and there are notes all over the margins. And you know I was a theater kid too. I was all over the place.

During the decades after Brown v. Board of Education there was terrific progress. Tens of thousands of public schools were integrated racially. During that time the gap between black and white achievement narrowed.

Freedom begins with what we teach our children. That is why Jews became a people whose passion is education whose heroes are teachers and whose citadels are schools.
