It's a lot of work to keep reinventing yourself and coming up with new stuff but that's what it takes to be in show business.
I could play it safe by recording songs that are familiar but am I expanding myself as an artist by doing covers? It's a catch-22. It's called show business: The word 'business' is in it and you've got to be a businessman. But then again you have to be true to yourself as an artist.
I learned you have to fight for yourself in the picture business.
Don't think of yourself as a woman in business.
If you deprive yourself of outsourcing and your competitors do not you're putting yourself out of business.
The hardest thing about being in this business is just being able to be yourself. People act like there's this one set of rules to follow to be a pop star and I think 'Well you say I'm a pop star so maybe that's not true.'
There are pros and cons of experience. A con is that you can't look at the business with a fresh pair of eyes and as objectively as if you were a new CEO. Fire yourself on a Friday night and come in on Monday morning as if a search firm put you there as a turn-around leader. Can you be objective and make the bold change?
There is no substitute for accurate knowledge. Know yourself know your business know your men.
To me business isn't about wearing suits or pleasing stockholders. It's about being true to yourself your ideas and focusing on the essentials.
The golden rule for every business man is this: 'Put yourself in your customer's place.'
