I hope telling stories though 'Making a Difference' - as in my academic work and nonprofit work - will help me to live my grandmother's adage of 'Life is not about what happens to you but about what you do with what happens to you.'

My hope is that I will take the good from my experiences and extrapolate them further into areas with which I am unfamiliar. I simply do not know exactly what that difference will be in my judging. But I accept there will be some based on my gender and my Latina heritage.

As a black man my hope is that I can touch more and more people all over the world of different races and different colours.

The thing about being at home versus being out in the world working is it's a whole different vibe. When I'm home with my kids and partner I will cook - even though she's a very good cook. She's learned over the years. We started with basics you know how to saute onions how to saute mushrooms.

I go home and don't get treated any differently. People have known me all my life and are interested and very supportive but because they have known me forever I don't get any diva treatment. My mum still tells me off if I haven't loaded the dishwasher for her.
