I worked night and day for twelve years to prevent the war but I could not. The North was mad and blind would not let us govern ourselves and so the war came.

War is so unjust and ugly that all who wage it must try to stifle the voice of conscience within themselves.

Most people live in a myth and grow violently angry if anyone dares to tell them the truth about themselves.

Let us begin by committing ourselves to the truth to see it like it is and tell it like it is to find the truth to speak the truth and to live the truth.

Those who never retract their opinions love themselves more than they love the truth.

When we believe ourselves in possession of the only truth we are likely to be indifferent to common everyday truths.
