To insult someone we call him 'bestial. For deliberate cruelty and nature 'human' might be the greater insult.

The impulse to cruelty is in many people almost as violent as the impulse to sexual love - almost as violent and much more mischievous.

Love has its place as does hate. Peace has its place as does war. Mercy has its place as do cruelty and revenge.

Man is subject to innumerable pains and sorrows by the very condition of humanity and yet as if nature had not sown evils enough in life we are continually adding grief to grief and aggravating the common calamity by our cruel treatment of one another.
