Nobody needs a smile so much as the one who has none to give. So get used to smiling heart-warming smiles and you will spread sunshine in a sometimes dreary world.

The assumption that nature is all there is and that nature has been governed by the same rules at all times and places makes it possible for natural science to be confident that it can explain such things as how life began.

As it turns out what looks like science sometimes is not.

Before I was reading science fiction I read Hemingway. Farewell to Arms was my first adult novel that said not everything ends well. It was one of those times where reading has meant a great deal to me in terms of my development - an insight came from that book.

The central task of science is to arrive stage by stage at a clearer comprehension of nature but this does not at all mean as it is sometimes claimed to mean a search for mastery over nature.

It is sometimes important for science to know how to forget the things she is surest of.
