Many artists and scholars have pointed out that ultimately art depends on human nature.

In the same way that we need statesmen to spare us the abjection of exercising power we need scholars to spare us the abjection of learning.

Men have a respect for scholarship and learning greatly out of proportion to the use they commonly serve.
