President Kennedy was willing to go to war. He was not a coward. The man had been in war and so had Ken O'Donnell. He was ready to protect this nation but he was not ready for a military solution just because it was being rammed down his throat.

Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and the war on terrorism have reduced the pace of military transformation and have revealed our lack of preparation for defensive and stability operations. This Administration has overextended our military.

The military don't start wars. Politicians start wars.

The basic problems facing the world today are not susceptible to a military solution.

To say that you now trust the Russian military command and control system because some Russian general told you from the bottom of his heart that's the case strikes me as most unrealistic.

I believe the main solution is to gain the trust of Europe and America and to remove their concerns over the peaceful nature of our nuclear industry and to assure them that there will never be a diversion to military use.

But as far as being an American and loving this country and getting a chance to travel across it every day and meeting people on the road and folks in the military I love this country on so many different levels.

I come from a small town and I come from a background where we didn't have money to travel. I thought I'd have to join the military to get to Europe. So I'm thrilled to travel.

Every one of our greatest national treasures our liberty enterprise vitality wealth military power global authority flow from a surprising source: our ability to give thanks.

Triumphant science and technology are only at the threshold of man's command over sources of energy so stupendous that if used for military purposes they can wipe out our entire civilization.
