Just two weeks ago millions of Iraqis defied the threats of terrorists and went to the polls to determine their own future. I congratulate the Iraqi people for the courage they've shown in making these elections so successful.

We know the threats - from global terrorist networks to the spread of deadly weapons. Yet we also know that embedded in this time of danger is the promise of a new day if we have the courage and commitment to work together.

That said the question remains: how to strike the balance between free speech and mutual respect in this mixed-up world both blessed and cursed with instant communication? We should not fight fire with fire threats with threats.

I think we have to face the reality that in a society where there is a legitimate threat of terrorism not being able to see one's face not being able to have some sense of communication in that way is for many societies a challenge.

People can undergo a sudden change of thinking and loyalties under threat of death or intense social pressure and isolation from friends and family.

We have to face the reality of climate change. It is arguably the biggest threat we are facing today.

Climate change was a point of division between Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney. The president declared climate change a global threat acknowledged that the actions of humanity were deepening the crisis and pledged to do something about it if elected.

There is a limit to the application of democratic methods. You can inquire of all the passengers as to what type of car they like to ride in but it is impossible to question them as to whether to apply the brakes when the train is at full speed and accident threatens.

The great fear that hung over the business community in the 1970s was death by regulation and the great goal of the conservative movement as it rose to triumph in the 1980s was to remove that threat - to keep OSHA the EPA and the FTC from choking off entrepreneurship with their infernal meddling in the marketplace.

Among the best traitors Ireland has ever had Mother Church ranks at the very top a massive obstacle in the path to equality and freedom. She has been a force for conservatism... to ward off threats to her own security and influence.
