Sometimes a character is really based on research that you do. Other times it's just based on your imagination or perhaps your conversation with the director. Or sometimes all of the above. It depends on the movie and character.
Everything I think about acting is based on imagination.
And you know whether it's drama or comedy the best work is based on truth. It's just that with comedy the circumstances are just crazy-heightened and you have these crazy things thrown at you. But you still have to do it truthfully because that's where the humor comes from. So it's not that difficult to cross over.
I've always chosen my band members based on their sense of humor. It might sound stupid but it means not only are they fun to live with on a tour bus for years but humor implies intelligence.
