In politics... never retreat never retract... never admit a mistake.
Women are treated as unjustly in poetry as in life. The feminine ones are not idealistic and the idealistic not feminine.
Do not make the mistake of treating your dogs like humans or they will treat you like dogs.
I am fond of pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals.
Treaties of peace made after war are entrusted to individuals to negotiate and carry out.
I came here as a practical man to talk not simply on the question of peace and war but to treat another question which is of hardly less importance - the enormous and burdensome standing armaments which it is the practice of modern Governments to sustain in time of peace.
Some people suggest that the problem is the separation of powers. If you had a parliamentary system the struggle for power would not result in such complex peace treaties that empower so many different people to pursue so many contradictory aims.
Are ideals confined to this deformed experiment upon a noble purpose tainted as it is with bargains and tied to a peace treaty which might have been disposed of long ago to the great benefit of the world if it had not been compelled to carry this rider on its back?
Each one of these treaties is a step for the maintenance of peace an additional guarantee against war. It is through such machinery that the disputes between nations will be settled and war prevented.
Peace is not made at the council table or by treaties but in the hearts of men.
