I start really missing London when I go away. I have a little flat but very central. I live above a pub and you'd think it'd be a nightmare but I like hearing the music and it's quite comforting.

I'm quite private. And I never wanted to be the biggest star in the world really. So in that sense I've got a good balance of doing great shows of making an appearance every now and then and writing music and I don't really have to do much else.

Men are wary of me because they know by listening to my music that a relationship with me will be quite deep.

If I hadn't of had music in my life it's quite possible I'd be dead and I'd much rather be alive.

I felt I really wanted to back off from music completely and just work within the visual arts in some way. I started painting quite passionately at that time.

Secretly I wanted to look like Jimi Hendrix but I could never quite pull it off.

We are also fortunate in being in quite a sheltered environment in terms of people moving on to do other things because there are relatively few companies in Scotland that are looking for the skill set that we've developed.

I remember when first Stripes and then Animal House came out - which I was really proud of even though it was kind of loose and quite raucous - there were imitative movies that were not quite as good.

When we were doing 'Freaks and Geeks' I didn't quite understand how movies and TV worked and I would improvise even if the camera wasn't on me. I thought I was helping the other actors by keeping them on their toes but nobody appreciated it when I would trip them up. So I was improvising a little bit back then but not in a productive way.

The music led to the acting. But movies aren't something you can just will yourself into. Someone has to choose you and you have to be quite fortunate to be chosen.
