That attitude does not exist so much today but in those days there was a very sharp distinction between basic physics and applied physics. Columbia did not deal with applied physics.
Of the billionaires I have known money just brings out the basic traits in them. If they were jerks before they had money they are simply jerks with a billion dollars.
